Front-End Engineer
£60,000 plus excellent benefits (Work Level 6A)
Manchester City Centre (Remote)
This is a UK remote first role, with an option to work from our Manchester office for those who want to. You may be asked to occasionally attend meetings in Manchester (find out more about our hybrid working policy at colleagues.coop.co.uk/hybrid-working-policy).

We’re open to applications from candidates who may require flexible working arrangements. There’ll be an opportunity to discuss your flexible working requirements during the interview process, and at offer stage.

Please be aware Co-op does not offer visa sponsorship for this opportunity

We’re looking for a Front-End Engineer to join our Digital Membership Experience (DMX) team to help build, maintain and improve the services that provide our customers with a simple, cohesive account experience across Co-op.

You’ll work alongside a community of Quality Coaches, Software Engineers, and Platform Engineers to build the products, services, and platforms that play a big role in our communities. You’ll design and build web-based platforms, with a focus on great user experience. If you have the front-end experience that we’re looking for, and a passion to create solutions that meet our user needs, we can offer you the chance to build your career with a business that puts people at the heart of its strategy.

What you’ll do

  • Drive continuous improvement in the performance, accessibility and UX of our live services
  • Use modern engineering practices like TDD, pair or mob programming, and continuous deployment
  • Collaborate with the wider design teams (e.g., interaction, visual, content, service design and user research) to create the best possible experience for our users
  • Use your knowledge and expertise to provide guidance to your team

This role would suit people who have

  • Significant experience creating performant and accessible front-end applications
  • A strong understanding of web accessibility standards such as Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and the ability to identify potential issues when using a screen reader and keyboard
  • Experience writing modern HTML, CSS (including pre-processors such as PostCSS or Sass), and ES6+ JavaScript/Typescript
  • Experience using reactive and component-driven JavaScript frameworks such as React, Vue.js, or an equivalent
  • A strong understanding of version control tools and branching models
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; able to translate often complex and intricate information across multi-disciplinary teams
  • A strong attention to detail and some basic experience of design tools (e.g. Figma/Sketch/Illustrator)

We know that some candidates are less likely to apply for a role if they don’t meet all the criteria in the job description. At Co-op, we're committed to building a diverse and inclusive working environment, so if you'd like to apply for this role but your experience doesn't quite meet every point, we'd still encourage you to apply. You may be just the right candidate for the job or other roles we have available.

Why Co-op?

As a Co-op colleague, we can offer you a competitive salary and great benefits package which includes 30% off Co-op branded products in our food stores (as well as other discounts on Co-op products and services). You’ll also get:

  • An annual bonus (based on personal and business performance)
  • 28 days holiday (rising to 32 with service) plus bank holidays
  • A pension with up to 10% employer contributions
  • Access to a subsidised onsite gym (at our Manchester HQ)
  • Coaching and training to support your career development
  • Wagestream – a money management app that gives you access to a percentage of your pay as you earn it

Building an inclusive work environment

At Co-op, we’re proud to do things a different way. As one of the world’s largest co-operatives, owned by millions of members, community is at the heart of what we do. Since our Co-op was founded in 1844, we’ve had a clear social purpose, and everything we do as a business helps to build more value for our member-owners every day.

We’re actively building diverse teams and we welcome applications from everyone. If you have a disability, we can make reasonable adjustments to our recruitment process according to your needs. We're also part of the Disability Confident scheme, meaning we'll always offer an interview to disabled candidates who apply through the scheme if they meet the minimum criteria for a job.

We'll ask whether you’d like to be considered under the Disability Confident scheme when you apply.

If we invite you to take part in the recruitment process for any of our jobs, we’ll ask you if you need any reasonable adjustments to enable you to participate.

You can find out more about our recruitment process at jobs.coop.co.uk/apply-process.
